NFL History

On this day, almost ninety years ago, one of the most recognized organizations in the US was officially organized. The National Football League has its origins on September 17, 1920. Originally created as the American Professional Football Association, the NFL was created to eliminate confusion in the sport of professional football. Facilitated by rising salaries, players following the highest monetary offers, and athletes playing professionally while still enrolled in school, the creation of an organization in which all players had the same rules seemed the fair answer. A President and Vice-President were elected and the scheduling was left up to the teams of which only fourteen existed. The sport and the NFL have come a long way since 1920, but the love of the game remains intact.

Skateboarding

The craze that we now know as skateboarding has its origins in California in the 1950s. What originated as a way to "ride the streets" among surfers has grown into something bigger than anyone could have imagined. The first skateboards were simply wooden planks with roller skate wheels put onto the bottoms. The popularity of this activity grew enough to include the manufacturing of skateboards and the opening of skate shops. However, by 1965, the fad had died out. It wasn’t until 1972, when urethane skateboard wheels were created, that skateboarding took on the form that it has today. Skateboarding became more than just a hobby, but a sport that was taken seriously through competitions and amazing stunts. Though skateboarding has seen many slumps and changes in popularity from the 70s to the present, it continues to press on as a dangerous, yet thrilling sport.

Did you know that September is Cable Television Month? In honor of this event, let’s take a look back in time to the beginning of the phenomenon we know today as Cable TV. In 1948, in Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Arkansas, cable television originated almost simultaneously. In remote areas, community antennas were erected on the high points of these locations and each household was connected to the wires to receive television broadcasts. By the late 1950s the goal of cable shifted from providing local broadcast signals to that of providing more programming options. There was a slight freeze in cable television efforts when the local stations felt threatened by those using distant signals in the late 60s and early 70s, but by 1972, with the creation of HBO and the introduction of the satellite, the industry all but exploded with the growth of program networks and hasn’t been the same since. The rest, as they say, is history.

Amelia Earhart

On this day in 1932, seventy-seven years ago, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the United States. Just in time for upcoming biographical film “Amelia,” here are some facts about the female pilot that changed history in so many ways:

Amelia Earhart took her first flying lesson on January 3, 1921. Six months later she had enough money to buy her own plane.
Earhart was called “Lady Lindy” because she resembled Charles Lindbergh.
Earhart met Orville Wright at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in 1937, the same year she disappeared.
Earhart refused to don typical flying gear -she wore a suit or dress instead of the "high-bread aviation togs," a close-fitting hat instead of a helmet, didn't put on her goggles until she taxied to the end of the field and removed them immediately upon landing.
The United States government spent $4 million looking for Earhart, which made it the most costly and intensive air and sea search in history at that time.

Twenty-eight years ago on August 12th, IBM introduced the first computer meant for home and personal use, or as we call it today, a PC. The deliciously cute candies, PEEPS®, that are usually associated with Easter celebrations, didn’t start off as marshmallows at all. The founder of the company, Sam Born, actually began his creativity with chocolates in a small shop in New York City. Born made a new batch of chocolates every morning and posted a sign that read, “Just Born,” to proclaim that his candies were fresh. In 1953, after relocating to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the Just Born Company bought Rodda Candy Company, which produced hand squeezed marshmallow candies in the shape of chicks. Since the Borns found these candies “intriguing,” they went about creating machines to mass produce them in the factory. The Amphitptere is a legless, winged serpent that can be found along the banks of the Nile. It guards frankincense-bearing trees and threatens all who want to harvest the resin.
The Heraldic Dragon is the most widespread of its kind. It has massive fangs, four clawed legs and a ridge of sharp spines that stretches from its spiked nose to its barbed and stinging tail.
· The Guivre is a legless and wingless serpent that is immensely powerful. It has a massive dragon head, horned and bearded and likes to live near water.
· The Wyvern is feared for its viciousness it brought to northern Europe, Greece and Ethiopia. The wyvern has a coiling trunk and a pair of eagle's legs, which are tucked beneath its wings.
· The Lindworm falls between the birdlike wyvern and the snakelike guivre because it has a serpentine body with one pair of legs. The Italian traveler Marco Polo reported seeing some lindworms while crossing the steppes of Central Asia.

Saving Old Checks

We all know that saving important documents is a good idea, especially when it comes to proof of payment. But how long is too long to hold onto a used check? First, make sure to keep any check that is proof of payment for a major debt or bill within the last fifteen years as this is the longest statute of limitations on debt collections. Also, keep anything that you will need for tax purposes going back seven years. Furthermore, banks are required to keep copies of your checks dating back seven years as well. In 1909, as she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon, Sonora Smart Dodd thought to create a holiday to honor fathers everywhere. Having been raised solely by her father after her mother’s death, Sonora thought very highly of him and thought there should be a special day when all children could honor their fathers in the same way. She held the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910, the same month as her father’s birthday. What Would You Do?

Earlier this month, Talon Curtis found what she thought was a fake check from a sweepstakes company littering the pavement where she walked. As she proceeded to put this “fake” check into the garbage, Curtis realized that the check was legitimate. Shocked to see an actual cashier’s check in the amount of $357, 959.55, Curtis immediately began a search for the rightful owner. As it was Saturday evening and banks were closed, she held the check until Monday morning when she called the appropriate bank. To ensure the check was delivered safely, Curtis drove it to the bank herself. Later, the check was returned to its panicked, yet thankful owner. Curtis says her only regret is that she did not get to return the check in person. She wanted to see her face and remind her that some people still do the right thing!

Ever wonder how the traditions of the hiding Easter eggs, exchanging Easter baskets, and the Easter bunny himself came into existence? Well, this year, when someone wonders that same thing, you can give them an answer! The most common historical account of Easter’s beginning starts with Eostre (from which the word “Easter” is derived), or the Anglo-Saxon goddess of Spring. Sometime in the second century, Christian missionaries combined the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ with the celebration of the goddess Eostre in an attempt to convert certain tribes to Christianity. During medieval times, eggs were not allowed to be eaten during Lent. Thus, eggs became a customary food at Easter meals. Also, parents began to hide eggs for children to find, which helped form the tradition of Easter egg hunts. Because rabbits have always been a sign of fertility, Germans created a story of an Easter hare that laid eggs for children to find. So this year, when you are making Easter baskets or hiding Easter eggs, think of these traditions and where they have their origins.

While checks are getting less and less mileage these days, they have truly been a huge part of history. In 1868, a check for $7.2 million was written to Russia for the purchase of Alaska. Signed by Russia’s minister to the United States, he allowed for the funds to be transferred from the U.S. Treasury to Russia. In the 70s, when Italy ran out of coins, each bank was allowed to issue mini checks, or “mini-assegni,” in replace of them. While it was a clever idea, each bank had its own checks, making it next to impossible to tell which were counterfeit. In 1953, Albert Einstein wrote a check for $5 to pay for a newspaper subscription. Finally, in 1970, John Lennon wrote a check for 101 pounds to pay his electric bill. It never hurts to be extra cautious when it comes to your money. Here are some tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of a fake check scam:

Do not fall for a pitch about winning a sweepstakes or receiving millions for keeping foreign money in your bank account

Avoid random e-mails or faxes advertising job opportunities or buyers for products you are trying to sell

Scammers usually claim to be in a different country and say it is too difficult to send a check from there.

Do not wire money to someone after you have deposited his check into your account
Pay extra attention to the checks to make sure they are not fraudulent.

Checks can take weeks before they bounce and the forgery is uncovered, so track the checks you receive very closely.

Report any fraudulent activity right away! You are responsible for your bank account and may have to pay the bank out of pocket should fees be incurred.

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,” is a celebration that has historical roots back much farther than the beginning of the United States. Beginning in Rome, the event was initially a circus-type celebration called Lupercalia. When Christianity came to Rome, officials decided it would be better to incorporate these rituals into the new faith rather than to abolish them. Thus, Mardi Gras became a time of enjoyment that preceded Lent and the Easter holiday. The festival came to America in 1699 with a French explorer who settled slightly south of present day New Orleans. Today, Mardi Gras is celebrated annually on February 24th with parades, costumes, and other festivities that usually include colorful garments of green, purple, and gold.

As a new hit on FOX television, Secret Millionaire follows several real-life millionaires as they go undercover and work minimum wage jobs. Giving up their lavish lifestyles, these millionaires became a part of a different world as they made friends with people from ordinary communities. Dangers of Using Debit Cards

Even though using your debit card is very convenient, there are still a few danger zones to avoid when doing so. While banks have begun providing fraud protection on debit cards, they are still not as safe as credit cards. Some banks will not reimburse the user for fraudulent purchases or fees if the card is not reported stolen within ten days. When using a debit card, merchant disputes over an item’s price may become difficult. Credit card companies do not charge you for the disputed item until the conflict is resolved. Debit card purchases, however, are immediately deducted from your checking account and funds are only deposited back if the conflict resolves in your favor. Fraudulent debit card purchases may lead to overdraft fees, which may or may not be refunded back once the conflict is resolved. Another danger with using a debit card is that you must constantly keep track of purchases so as not to think more money is available and accidentally overspend. Additionally, some merchants still do not accept debit cards, which can make shopping a very complicated experience there. Finally, many banks charge fees for using debit cards, like ATM fees when a customer withdraws money from an ATM not affiliated with his bank.
